What’s It Like Living in Portland, Maine, Compared to Boston?
Thinking about trading Boston’s fast pace for Maine’s coastal charm? You’re not alone. Over the past few years, I’ve helped many clients make the move from Boston to Portland, and I’ve loved hearing their reasons for choosing this beautiful city. Whether it’s being closer to family, returning home, or simply wanting a better quality of life, Portland offers the perfect mix of comfort, convenience, and character.
Let’s Talk About Traffic
When new clients visit from the Boston area, they often laugh at what we call “traffic.” Here in Portland, a long line at one traffic light or a short summer construction delay counts as a big deal. It’s definitely not something we experience every day.
During the summer months, downtown Portland gets busier and our scenic roads see more use, especially with tourists exploring the coast and lakes. Even so, it’s nothing like the congestion you face daily in Boston.
Getting Around
Portland does have public transportation, mainly the Metro bus system, which runs throughout the city and to nearby towns. Most people, however, rely on ride-share services like Uber and Lyft.
If having access to public transit is important to you, it’s a good idea to look at the bus routes and stop locations before you move. Portland is easy to get around, but it helps to know your options ahead of time.
Shopping and Everyday Living
One of my favorite things about Portland is that it truly has everything you need. You’ll find a great mix of local shops, farmers markets, and small grocers, along with all the major stores you’re used to.
There’s just the right amount of variety. You have plenty of options, but not so many that it feels overwhelming. It’s a nice balance of small-town charm and big-city convenience.
Cost of Living and Quality of Life
For many people, the cost of living is one of the biggest reasons to move from Boston to Portland. Once you realize that Portland offers so much—culture, great restaurants, access to nature, and a beautiful coastal setting—it becomes a very appealing choice.
Many of my clients begin their home search in the Boston area and quickly discover that what they can afford there is far different from what they can find here. When they see the value, the space, and the quality of life Portland offers, the decision to move often becomes an easy one.
