There is no shortage of fantastic restaurants in Portland, Maine. Our city is nationally recognized for its vibrant food scene, award-winning chefs, and restaurants that consistently punch well above their weight for a city of this size. As someone who has lived in Portland for over 20 years, I can confidently say that one of the hardest parts of living here is deciding where to go out to dinner.

My husband and I often find ourselves debating whether to try somewhere new or return to one of our tried-and-true favorites. Portland has a way of making both options equally tempting.

If you’re planning a date night in Portland, Maine—whether it’s a special evening that calls for a reservation or a spontaneous night out where you grab seats at the bar—these are my top three local restaurant recommendations.

Solo Italiano

Solo Italiano is one of Portland’s standout Italian restaurants, known for its incredibly fresh, seasonal menu and strong focus on locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes regularly to reflect what’s available, which makes every visit feel a little different.

Two standout dishes worth mentioning are the Tartara di Tonno, a favorite appetizer, and the Agnello alla Romana, which is some of the best lamb I’ve ever had. The bar area is large and circular, making it an excellent option if you prefer bar seating for dinner. The entire restaurant has a warm, cozy feel and is located right on Commercial Street, with large windows that overlook the activity outside.

Fore Street

Fore Street is a true Portland classic and a must-visit for anyone exploring the Portland, Maine food scene. Known for its wood-fired meats and ever-changing seasonal menu, this restaurant highlights the best of Maine’s local ingredients.

From the moment you walk in, Fore Street feels welcoming. Between the brick exterior, warm wood tones throughout the dining room, and the incredible aromas coming from the wood-fired oven, it feels like being invited into a home kitchen. You truly can’t go wrong with any of their wood-fired dishes, and the overall experience captures the essence of dining in Portland.

Street & Company

Located on the cobblestone stretch of Wharf Street in the heart of the Old Port, Street & Company is another beloved Portland classic. Owned by the same team as Fore Street, this intimate seafood restaurant offers a cozy, relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for a date night.

The dining room overlooks the open kitchen, allowing you to see—and smell—everything as it’s prepared. One dish that should not be missed is the scallops in Pernod, which remains one of my all-time favorite dishes in Portland. If you’re looking for a classic seafood experience in Portland, Maine, this is it.

Portland’s restaurant scene is one of the many reasons people love living here. Whether you’re a long-time local or considering a move to Portland, Maine, these restaurants offer an authentic taste of what makes this city so special.
